Simple WoW improvements that I would like to see

There are few things I've noticed that should be changed and should be really easy to implement.

- In Orgrimar NPC's for battlegrounds queueing should be placed in an elevated position. Is always a trouble to click on them among many players in the surroundings. Not to mention that when a battleground is finished, players are automatically placed near those NPC's.

- Also adding in the world more NPC's for queueing would be nice

- A better method for LFG/LFM search. At least Blizzard seems to have learned that a LookingForGroup channel active at server level is a bad idea. And last minor patch just turned off by default that chat channel. Just too much spam.

Always speaking about the LFG system.
Having a chat for the purpouse is a nice idea but nothing is better than a nicely designed ad hoc interface. Is that hard to make a window with a list of on going groups and/or players wanting to join or make a group? Eventually with a field with just the name of the zone and/or quest involved?

There's already addons that do that, like CallToArms. But having something that is builtin in the game is surely better than having to rely on players to download and install an addon.

Yes, outside dungeons there's some stones that can (or should I would have to say) help in finding a group. But they came late and at first never worked as planned. And even if (don't know) they work now, nobody use them.

And anyway I think there's a mistake with them. A tool can be well designed but to be effective need to respond to the needs of the users. WoW players won't get into the hassle to personally move near a dungeon to register on those stones hoping to find someone going for the same dungeon. Everyone tend to just find a working group and then decide what to do. Or many could be happy to make a run in two or more dungeons. Don't matter wich one as there's always multiple choices.

To all this, add that WoW has thousand quests. And there's no tool to arrange groups for quests. Oh well... actually the only tool is that chat.

Playing the game (even from beta) you could see how much work did Blizzard to make a very polished game. With a great care for even the smallest detail. I wonder how that thing hadn't been handled with the same care. Not to mention how it has the same faults even after nearly 2 years.

FireFox 2.0 beta

I'm happy to hear that firefox is growing and growing. Not only is growing it's acceptance and usage, but also as a product as version 2.0 beta1 is going to be ready soon.

Beta1 of v2.0 was planned to be avaible tomorrow (July 11 2006) but had been postponed by few days. For me is okey anyway. Few days of wait aren't an issue.

Beta or not beta, I really suggest anyone to get FireFox and give it a try. Not only is easy to use like any other web browser.... but it's also safer and has less bugs. And critical bugs found are always patched around the clock.

The only software that has no bugs and no security issues at all is the one that does nothing and even that is at risk. The difference often is in how fast those insecurities are fixed once discovered.

Just some tests for better viewing

All I want is to make a blog with a nice and clean index page. For that reason I prefer to not show full articles inside main page. Better a teaser and who is interested can click and read more.

Doing so, visitors can get a full view of last posts without having to scroll down too much.

Such idea isn't new and even not that complicated once you know how to do it with the tools avaible. Hope everyone could enjoy this style change.

Electronic Arts, Ultima Online and anticheating PunkBuster

I'm a former Ultima Online player. And UO (Ultima Online) is still in my heart, even if I never logged again since 4 years ago.

Now I noticed that EA is going for big changes to prevent cheating and unattended macroing. I don't know if the cure is better than the desease itself.

Mining can be fun the very first evening of play. After that it's simply boring and is hard to think someone could survive the tedium to click on a rock, wait for mining animation to stop and click again few times. And then move in a near place and start again. And that's not for few minutes of play. Miners do mining for hours.

So it's true, there's programs, scripts and many tricks to automate all this work. With some tools, knowledge and expertise there are players that are able to automate everything.

Mined ore is needed for crafted items but sincerely is a boring activity.

Now, EA (actual UO publisher) want to get rid of macroer's but seem there's no planned changes with mining activities. Will be kept as is, boring and worse than any imaginable work.

To make it worse, EA had choosen PunkBuster as a third party system to actualy scan computer memory and processes to detect anomalies and macroing softwares activities. In my eyes that's very close to spyware. Not to mention that had been reported performance issues when PunkBuster is active. And online games and games in general always need good performances to be enjoyable.

Now, this isn't of my real concern as I don't play UO anymore. But I understand worries of the many actual players.

WOW (World of Warcraft) one of the most searched words on google

Googling a bit I stumbled on a Google Current TV video. Among various things (in that video) there's something I didn't knew....

"WOW" is one of the top 200 terms searched on google. As stated in the video, wow isn't the usual exclamation but is the abbreviation of World of Warcraft. A game account over 6 million of active paying players. (for more info www.worldofwarcraft.com)

For who don't want to see all video, just jump at about 3/4 of total length.

Also here below, video "Internet is for porn" referenced in the previous video. (No worries, is a funny song with game characters dancing. Nothing explicit)

Bad news for ToonTown in germany

Just now I took notice of something that can scare any MMORPG player. WaltDisney germany dismissed the game and simply deleted all characters registered on the server.

For who don't know MMORPG games, let me explain. Players dedicate months or years playing and the character (toon) just keep acquiring new gadget and features over the time . There's a lot of dedication and effort in that. Like a webmaster that work everyday to improve his website.

Now, the very worst thing that could happen is... to have everything deleted, wiped. With no solution of recover. In my opinion WaltDisney (owner of ToonTown) should have taken the time to copy characters over the US servers. There's nothing they can say about that. Is their fault.

Link to the ariticle I'm referring to.

Google Checkout, will it get more acceptance than MS Passport?

Now it's days that Google Checkout service is up and running. There's a nice video that explain very clear and simple what this service does. Basically is very similar with the original idea of Microsoft's Passport.

Time ago Microsoft tried to push his all in one login and user information service. One login for any service. One place for storing user information. Any thirdparty service could attach to it and use it for login purpouse.

Anyway the idea even if good got very warm acceptance. Not many trusted Microsoft. And probably not many urged the need to have a anique login.

Now seems Google's turn to try something like that. Google point of view is a little different and also it's different the time. May be that now the market could be more mature for wide acceptance of such services. Also they start with the payment in the mind.

I live in Italy and here credit cards are widely avaible as much as any other place. But it's really different from countries like United States. Here many are very diffident in the use of credit card payments. So may be that many could trust Google more than the average shop and will start using Checkout service to buy on those shops they trust less than Google.

For sure Google will have to work hard with that service. Not for the technical point of view. They already know how to make it work. The hard part will be finding vendors to use the service so that customers can use it. And making people trust the system as a whole and so, used.

Only the future will tell if Google will win with this service.

World of Offline Gaming

Found on google video, very funny.
At least should be funny for the millions of WoW players and other MMORPG gamers in general.

original description is:
Woog is a short film depicting what would happen should online gamers take their MMORPG behavior into the real world.

It's mostly based on World of Warcraft, but gamers of all shapes and sizes should be able to enjoy it.

When you need half an hour to register on a forum

I miss the simple days when everyone were used to use mailing lists or newsgroups...

To enter into a community with some of my friends I had to register into a forum. Okey, I don't like it but there's nothing wrong. I just get into the website I got provided with and clicked on "Register".

After filling the usual fields I discover that the choosen ID was already taken. Okey, nothing wrong with it. It's easy to fix and pickup a new one. After a couple of tries I found an ID that hadn't been used by oneone before. But I discover that my email is invalid. That is starting to get really silly. Why my email is invalid? I use it every day. After reading better I discover that is already used on that system.

Within me, I start thinking.... May be I already registered on a different forum but on same service? Could be.... So I look around for a "send my login" but found nothing. Also after googling into my google mail I found that in reality I already did a registration in the past.

So things seems to get a bit more clear and having the user name I could ask for a password retrieval.... At least seems easy for anyone but in that case wasn't that easy.

Click on "password retrieval", inserted username (luckly found in one of my never deleted mail) and got a message like: "An email had been already sent and can't send anymore until a reply from that mail had been done".

So, recapping....
That forum can't send you the username giving your email. I found my username only because I found the initial registration mail.
You can't retrieve password as is dumb and don't send password if first request for any reason isn't received.....
You can't even register twice with same mail....

So in the end the only option is to get it away or register somewhere a temporary email from any free email service....

An that's one more reason to hate forums.
